birthday cake

Today is my 26th birthday and amidst all of the cupcakes and cake I've already managed to consume today, it got me thinking about the process involved in making and/or decorating cakes. I stumbled upon the Cake Fixation's explanation of how to create the "Two Peas in a Pod Cupcake Topper" which is absolutely adorable.

Stephanie's blog is full of cake-related tips and tutorials and she even has a tutorial entitled "How to Make a Fire Breathing Dragon Cake". That particular cake requires a trip to the hardware store for PVC pipe and the use of an electric screwdriver so you can immediately count me out on that one! I'll stick to my Betty Crocker box recipe and hand mixer.

  1. That was one of the things that always got me about "Ace of Cakes." Beautiful cakes, but there were so many the creations that were PVC pipe and wire and screens and wood, and... Hell, I can slap fondant on a skateboard and call it a cake. :)

    Happy birthday!

  2. Happy (belated) birthday!! Decorating cakes has become like another art form, it's kind of crazy how something that people are just going to dive into and destroy in a matter of minutes can take hours, even days to make.

Also, I don't know if you saw my blog about bad food photography, but it involved cakes I decorated with friends and this puts us to shame :) Very cute!

  3. Happy birthday! I too am a sapphire baby, but not a Virgo. I love the pea-pod cake idea and am surprised the writer was so sparse in her directions. Before I opened the web page, I thought that the instructions would be very dense. That is one thing I'm confused about with our assignment: should we assume the reader knows nothing and give instructions like "open bottle of pink luster dust", "insert brush into jar", or is it okay to just say "paint the baby's cheek with pink luster dust"? I had to write instructions for a technical writing class in my undergrad at UB and I wrote them on "How to Brush Your Teeth"--they were definitely "dumbed down" as we had to assume the reader knew nothing about the subject. Maybe I'll share those for fun if no one picks that topic.

  5. Happy Belated Birthday!! Since you live in Fed Hill, I hope someone got you a cupcake from Midnite Confections. I always see the cutest little decorative items on cakes and cupcakes, and ALWAYS think that I am creative enough to make them myself. One day, I decided that I was going to make a stacked cake with a cute little bow, all wrapped in fondant. I can't even express to you how bad my cake looked, and how terrible the fondant was...but at least the cake and homemade butter cream icing were good!
